Closing the Achievement & Gender Gap
Education bears the mantle of "the great equalizer" but for low-income inner city or rural children, and especially minority children, access to equal education simply isn't a reality.
Black males are affected more than any other group:
- Of the 50 states, 46 report that black male students have that lowest academic performance:
- By 8th grade, almost 70% of Black male students in Atlanta score below the basic reading level, while none reach the advanced level. National Assessment for Educational Progress, 2005
- Of those that beat the odds and make it to college, only 1 in 40 graduate from college. The Journal for Blacks in Higher Education, 2007
These students are overrepresented in every category for failure: special education, suspensions, and dropouts and underrepresented in every category for success; advance and gifted programs, leadership roles, and graduation.
Our students deserve more
Seventh & Sourou is a concept charter school for minority male students grade 6-12 that aims to close the achievement gap by providing a stable and supportive environment in which students can excel academically and personally.
